Starting daycare is an exciting milestone for your little one, and we know that getting organised can feel a bit overwhelming at first. Don’t worry, we’re here to help! We’ve put together this handy guide to ensure your child has everything they need for a happy, comfortable day of learning and play.
What to Pack for Daycare at Kiddie Garden
1. Sun Hat (Required)
Here in Parramatta, we take sun safety seriously! Please pack a wide-brimmed hat for your child each day. We have a “no hat, no play” policy to protect our little ones during outdoor activities. A wide brim provides the best protection for their face, ears, and neck. Make sure it’s clearly labelled with your child’s name and fits comfortably.
2. Labelled Backpack or Bag
Choose a backpack that’s easy for your child to recognise and manage. We’ll store it safely in the lockers, so there’s no need for anything too large. The key is making sure everything (including the bag itself!) is clearly labelled with your child’s name.
3. Spare Clothing
Pack at least one complete change of clothes in your child’s bag. Think about our beautiful but changeable NSW weather:
- Summer: Light, breathable clothes, a spare hat
- Winter: Warm layers, a jumper or jacket
- Rainy days: An extra pair of socks never goes astray!
- Sun-safe clothing: As children spend time outdoors enjoying our play areas, we encourage sun-safe clothing choices. Lightweight, long-sleeved tops provide excellent sun protection where possible. We understand that on hot Parramatta summer days, t-shirts are most comfortable and popular – our educators will apply sunscreen regularly to keep your little one protected. Please avoid sending your child in singlets clothing that leaves skin exposed to the sun.
- Don’t forget spare underwear – particularly if your child is toilet training. We regularly encourage toileting, but accidents happen, and we want to ensure your child is always comfortable.
Remember, children learn through play, which can get wonderfully messy. That spare outfit will come in handy!
4. Water Bottle
Every child needs their own labelled water bottle. Choose one that’s easy for little hands to open and close independently. We encourage children to stay hydrated throughout the day, especially during our warm Parramatta summers.
5. Nappies (if required)
If your child is still in nappies, please label each one with their name and pop them in the front pocket of their bag. This makes nappy changes quick and easy for our educators while ensuring we’re using the right products for your child.
6. Sheets for Nap Time
Rest time is an important part of our daily routine. Please provide cot-sized bedding including:
- One fitted sheet
- One flat sheet
- One pillowcase
You’re also welcome to include a small blanket and/or pillow if your child uses these for comfort – just make sure they’re cot-sized. All bedding should be clearly labelled and will be sent home regularly for washing.
7. Milk for Babies
If your baby is still on milk feeds, you can bring either:
- Pre-made bottles (labelled with your child’s name and the date)
- Pre-measured formula in a container (we’ll prepare bottles as needed)
All bottles must have lids and be clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Optional Items (But Often Appreciated!)
Fresh Fruit or Vegetables
We provide a nutritious fruit and vegetable platter for morning tea, and welcome your contribution. Bring one whole piece of fruit or a vegetable and place it in the basket near the sign-in table. It’s a lovely way for children to see the variety of fresh produce and try new things together.
Breakfast for Early Drop-Offs
Dropping off early? You’re welcome to bring breakfast for your child to enjoy when they arrive or during morning tea. Just let our educators know when you sign in.
What to Leave at Home
Nuts and Nut Products
To keep all our children safe, Kiddie Garden is a nut-free centre. Please check ingredient labels on any food items you bring.
Sunscreen
We’ve got this covered! High-quality sunscreen is provided at the centre and applied regularly throughout the day.
Good Clothes
This might sound funny, but please don’t dress your child in anything you’d be upset to see stained! Daycare is all about exploring, creating, learning self help skills, and developing independence. Paint, mud, food, and fun are all part of the experience. Dress your child in comfortable clothes that are perfect for getting messy.
Thongs or Loose Footwear
For safety during active play, please ensure your child wears closed sandals or sports shoes. Thongs and loose slip-ons can lead to trips and falls during running and climbing activities.
Lunch
We provide nutritious, balanced meals for all children throughout the day, so there’s no need to pack lunch. The only exception is at the end of the year for children transitioning to primary school – we’ll let you know when it’s time to practice using lunchboxes as part of our school readiness program!
Top Tips from Our Educators
Label Everything! We can’t stress this enough. From water bottles to spare undies, labels help us ensure each child gets their own belongings. Permanent markers or name labels work wonderfully.
Keep It Simple: Your child’s bag doesn’t need to be complicated. A simple backpack with the essentials makes life easier for everyone.
Check the Weather: Parramatta weather can be changeable, so look at the forecast each morning and adjust clothing accordingly.
Communicate With Us: Have questions about what to pack? Not sure if something is appropriate? Just ask! We’re always here to help and work together with you to make your family’s childcare experience as smooth as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What should I pack for my baby at Kiddie Garden?
Pack 2-3 complete changes of clothes as babies can experience nappy leaks, vomits, and feeding spills throughout the day. Include extra bibs and consider bringing a spare outfit in a larger size in case of emergencies.
What does my 1 year old need for daycare?
Bring 2 full changes of clothes, as one-year-olds are learning to walk (lots of tumbles!) and are messy self-feeders who love exploring sensory play. At this age, spills and accidents during meal times are very common as they develop their independence.
What should I pack for my 18 month old at daycare?
Pack 2 complete outfit changes as 18-month-olds are enthusiastic but messy eaters and love getting hands-on with paint, water play, and outdoor exploration. They’re also often beginning toilet training, which can mean extra changes needed.
What does my 2 year old need at daycare?
Bring 1-2 changes of clothes, as two-year-olds are often in the midst of toilet training and may have occasional accidents. They’re also developing independence with dressing but can still struggle with spills during meal times and enthusiastic messy play.
What should I pack for my 3 year old?
One complete change of clothes is usually sufficient, though pack an extra pair of underwear if they’re recently toilet trained. Three-year-olds are generally more confident with self-care skills but still enjoy messy creative activities and outdoor play.
What does my 4 year old need for daycare?
Pack one change of clothes as four-year-olds are typically quite independent with toileting and eating, though accidents can still happen during busy play or when they’re engrossed in activities. They’re developing strong self-help skills but still enjoy getting thoroughly messy during creative play and outdoor adventures.
